Activist Varvara Rao has been granted bail by Delhi High Court today.
The 82 year old poet and Human rights defender was under arrest for more than 2 years for allegedly being involved in Bhima Koregaon case.
Rao has been granted octogenarian bail for a period of six months with a condition that he can’t move out of jurisdiction of the special NIA Court.
“We feel that with the condition of the under trial, it would be inappropriate to send him back (to jail). It would be appropriate to impose such conditions,”The Court stated in the verdict.
“With all humility and human considerations, we are of the opinion that this is a fit case for allowing the relief,” a bench of Justices S.S. Shinde and Manish Pitale said.
Rao is currently admitted in the Nanavati Hospital. According to Public prosecutor Deepak Thakare Rao will be transferred to private hospital as directed by State Home Minister considering his case as special.
Rao’s family has alleged through repeated petitions that his treatment, while being incarcerated, has been little more than ‘inhuman’.
The poet, who’s been hailed as a revolutionary by many, was arrested in Bhima Koregaon case and was charged under the Unlawful Activities and Prevention Act.
The bail comes as ‘relief’, after several bail pleas were rejected earlier.
