Delhi’s Nizamuddin Markaz reopens for daily prayers after a year, 50 people can offer prayers

After more than a year, The Nizamuddin Markaz, the global headquarter of Tablighi Jamaat based in the Indian capital was finally opened for offering Shab-e-Barat prayers on March 28, with the permission to allow only 50 people at a time. The 50 people chosen by the Waqf board were allowed to offer prayers in the Markaz.

On Sunday, policemen on duty verified the names of the people who were allowed to enter the masjid.

Since March last year, the Markaz building had been locked on the orders of authorities after several people who attended a Tablighi Jamaat congregation got infected with Corona Virus. Out of all the people who attended the Jamaat were sent to jail with allegations of violating the rules of a pandemic to not conduct any kind of social or religious gatherings.

Soon after the gathering, a large section of mainstream media gave a communal angle in an attempt to demean the Tablighi Jamaat followers and Muslims at large.
Misinformation was spread through newsrooms blaming Muslims as conspirators to spread the pandemic.
Muslims were branded with names such as ‘corona-carriers’, ‘terrorist virus’ and often faced slurs like ‘corona is going’.
News channels even went on to term the congregation as ‘Corona-jihad’.

“We are happy to obey rules but there should be stricter implementation in gatherings across India during elections, where social distancing is being ignored. The media declared us human bombs when the fact was that people here were trapped like at many other places across the world due to sudden lockdown”, told a jama’at member as quoted by The Indian Express.

The permission to offer prayers was granted on the request made by senior advocate Ramesh Gupta and advocate Wajeeh Shafiq.

The mosque can only be used to offer prayers and the madrasa located inside won’t be functional, according to the application filed by lawyers.
