22 Covid patients dead in Maharashtra as tanker leak disrupts Oxygen supply

Twenty-two people Covid-19 patients died after the oxygen supply was interrupted at a hospital in Maharashtra’s Nashik on Wednesday.

According to Nashik district collector Suraj Mandhare, the supply was interrupted after leakage in one of the storage tankers at Dr Zakir Hussain Municipal Hospital.

“As per the current information, 22 people have died due to the interrupted supply of oxygen at the Zakir Hussain municipal hospital. The patients were on ventilators as well as on oxygen supply, which got interrupted after the leakage in the oxygen supply tank,” he told reporters.

An ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh will be provided to kin of the deceased, said Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) adding that a high-level inquiry has been ordered to probe the Nashik incident.

State health minister Rajesh Tope said, “This is an unfortunate incident. I spoke to Nashik municipal commissioner who has informed me that the situation is under control now. I’ll be going to Nashik soon. Nashik Guardian Min Chhagan Bhujbal has already gone there.”

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the deaths that occurred in the leakage incident and said, “Anguished by the loss of lives due to it.”

“The tragedy at a hospital in Nashik because of oxygen tank leakage is heart-wrenching. Anguished by the loss of lives due to it. Condolences to the bereaved families in this sad hour,” tweeted Modi.

Meanwhile, 58,924 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours.
