Ram Bhakt Gopal, a Hindutva activist who shot a student at Jamia Millia Islamia during anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests last year, has been arrested by Haryana police for making hate speech against Muslims during the Pataudi Hindu Mahapanchayat.

Gopal was arrested at Sikanderpur Badha village, said the police. The arrest came following the registration of a First Information Report against him under the sections of 153A and 295 of the IPC late on Sunday night on a complaint by a resident of Jamalpur village named Dinesh. The case was registered at Pataudi police station.

According to ANI, Gopal has been sent to judicial custody.

Earlier, on July 4, he encouraged the crowd at the Pataudi Mahapanchayat to kidnap Muslim women and “warned” those with a “terrorist mindset” that if he can “go to Jamia in support of CAA”.

Last year, the teenager had opened fire at anti-CAA protesters near Jamia Millia Islamia on January 30. He brandished a gun at the protesters and shouted “Yeh lo azadi (Here, take azadi)”, “Desh mein jo rehna hoga, Vande Mataram kehna hoga (If you want to stay in the country, you have to say Vande Mataram)” and “Dilli Police zindabad”. One student of the university was injured in the incident.
